Typing Test FAQs
Everything you need to know about typing metrics, calculating your speed, and improving your overall keyboard accuracy.
A good average typing speed is around 40 to 50 Words Per Minute (WPM). Professionals who type frequently, such as programmers, transcribers, or administrative staff, generally aim for 70 to 90 WPM. Reaching 100+ WPM places you in the top 1% of typists globally.
WPM is a standardized metric calculated by taking the total number of correct characters you typed, dividing that number by 5 (the accepted average length of a word), and then dividing by the time elapsed in minutes. Our engine factors in your accuracy to provide a true, net WPM score.
WPM stands for Words Per Minute, while CPM stands for Characters Per Minute. CPM measures the exact number of correct keystrokes you make in sixty seconds, offering a more granular look at your raw speed. You can easily convert WPM to CPM by multiplying your WPM score by 5.
The most effective way to improve is by mastering 'touch typing'—using all ten fingers and resting them on the home row (ASDF JKL;) without looking down at the keys. We highly recommend prioritizing accuracy over speed initially; as your muscle memory locks in, your WPM will naturally accelerate.
Our test is built with progressive difficulty scaling. The 'Easy' and 'Medium' modes focus strictly on lowercase word streams to help you build a solid baseline speed and rhythm. The 'Hard' mode introduces significantly longer, more complex vocabulary to challenge advanced typists.
